Your gun

I’ll tell you what I think
when I see you carrying your gun
on your side, in its custom holster
as you walk around the everyday world
we all live in, doing the things we all do, like
checking out at the hardware store
or sitting in a restaurant around
other people’s children.

I’m sure you think you’re just
prepared to “protect yourself,” to
“stand your ground.”  You may see yourself as
some kind of “action hero,” the “everyday Joe”
called upon to take down a shooter in
a public place.  You’re a big man.

But when I see you all I think is,
“Now there’s a guy who’s scared shitless.”
